Where finishing meets feeling
Every year, customers of finishing specialist GRÄFE Druckveredelung ask the same question: What makes exceptional print finishing worth the investment? In an industry where quality claims are common, proof must be tangible, memorable, and impossible to ignore.
For over a decade, GRÄFE Druckveredelung has answered this question not with promises, but with a gift. Its annual advent calendar has become a highly anticipated December tradition — a premium showcase that brings GRÄFE’s finishing expertise to life through 24 days of tactile discovery.
"The challenge lies in creating something that is both beautiful and compelling enough that demand remains high year after year. Customers keep it on desks and counters throughout December, revisiting it daily — and remembering it long after Christmas has passed"– explains Frank Denninghoff, Managing Director at GRÄFE Druckveredelung.
A daily demonstration of what's possible
GRÄFE’s 2025 advent calendar centres on the theme of “personal connection”. A white ribbon and red thread woven across its surface serve as a visual metaphor for the relationships that matter most — in business and in life.
The outer box is printed on Sappi’s Algro Design Duo 300 g/m², chosen for its symmetrical, fully coated surfaces that deliver identical performance on both sides. The 24 small, numbered boxes inside use Algro Design 270 g/m², a substrate GRÄFE relies on because it handles complex finishing with consistency and precision.
This year’s calendar arrives wrapped in a dark blue sleeve with a rough texture that creates immediate contrast. When recipients remove the sleeve, they encounter the smooth, refined surface of Algro Design Duo beneath — an intentional design choice that heightens the unboxing experience.
Inside, each of the 24 boxes features gold cold transfer applied to the reverse side of Algro Design 270 g/m². The outer surfaces showcase Lumafin®, highlighting the white ribbon motif, allowing underprinted designs to shine through with a pearlescent effect. Gold diffraction patterns bring movement to stars, hearts and lines. Fine red and gold details add warmth throughout.
The calendar is accompanied by a card that tells the story behind the theme, includes a recipe for almond biscuits and provides a handy three-month planner. These touches transform a promotional item into a personal gift that reflects care and attention.
The power of daily ritual
An advent calendar occupies a unique position in brand communication. Unlike a brochure that gets filed or an email that gets archived, its format demands interaction. Every morning in December, recipients return to it. Each opening reveals a new detail, a new finishing technique, a new possibility. That daily ritual creates emotional connection. Over 24 days, the calendar becomes part of the countdown to Christmas, associated with GRÄFE’s capabilities, as well as with anticipation, discovery and seasonal joy. Because it often sits in professional spaces, it reaches colleagues, clients, visitors and vendors. Each person who interacts with it experiences firsthand what exceptional finishing looks and feels like. Demand remains high year after year, and GRÄFE’s customers look forward to receiving it each December. That anticipation is proof the calendar has transcended marketing; it’s become an experience people value.
The materials that make it possible
Creating a calendar that performs across 24 boxes, each with different finishing techniques, requires substrates that behave predictably under pressure. GRÄFE turns to Algro Design and Algro Design Duo because they know exactly how these boards will respond.
"Their bright, even surfaces keep colour reproduction clean and precise. Their stability under heat, pressure and transfer protects fine details through every finishing step. And their resistance to ageing ensures the calendar looks as fresh on Christmas Eve as it did on 1 December," – Frank Denninghoff points out.
"For us, the value of a project like this sits in how GRÄFE uses the board's strengths in its own way," says Thomas Cotta, Sales Manager Packaging & Speciality Papers, Sappi Europe. "Their finishing work pushes the material to show what it can really do, and that's where Algro Design proves its worth over the entire season." These qualities are exactly what premium packaging and graphic applications demand: consistent performance, reliable finishing response and the ability to maintain quality through complex production processes.
